This photo of a bathhouse at the pond was taken by Edwin Locke for the Farm Security Administration in September 1937. After graduation, he tried out teaching, founding a progressive school with his brother, who not long after fell ill and died. A gifted student, he attended Harvard College, where his studies included rhetoric and philosophy. Walden is neither a novel nor a true autobiography, but a social critique of the Western World, with each chapter heralding some aspect of humanity that needed to be either renounced or praised.
